Reflexology An Ancient Healing Treatment for the 21st Century by Lorraine E. Cucci

There is an expression “the eyes are the windows to a person’s soul.” In reflexology, the hands and feet are the mirror images of a person’s physical and emotional balance.

Reflexology has been around since early civilizations. Our ancestors knew how to promote healing and balance of oneself long before western medicine gave us current treatments to cure our aches and pains. In today’s society, one of the number one problems that people are confronted with is stress which also is a common cause of many of our illnesses.

Internally, when we are bombarded with everyday stressors such as being overworked, worrying about finances, having a busy family life or just managing our day to day lives, our bodies react with increased levels of cortisol. These continuous increased levels of cortisol keep us in a “fight or flight” state and our bodies have a difficult time returning to a balanced or normal state. This sets the stage for illnesses which eventually can become chronic in nature.

Reflexology can help alleviate stress by

• promoting relaxation throughout the entire body.

• bringing balance and normalization, or homeostasis, of the body via the relaxation process.

• stimulating the process of elimination which will cleanse the body and ultimately improves its natural self-healing function.

• increasing the body’s circulation and delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all the cells of the body.

When the body returns to a more relaxed and balanced state, it will heal  itself. All of these processes contribute toward positive changes in the nervous, hormonal and lymphatic systems. The healing of the cells and tissues on all of these levels leads to the restoration of physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

So how does reflexology work?

There are reflex points on the hands and feet, as well as on the face and ears. Each reflex point, which is located on the tissue of the skin, corresponds to an organ or part of the body. When the reflex point is ‘worked on’, with various different techniques, it will produce a change in the body. This change will help the mind, body and emotional state of a person relax, thereby allowing the body to achieve homeostasis.

Reflexology can be used by itself or as a complementary therapy with a prescribed medical treatment. It can help a person return to a more balanced state where effective healing can take place.
