More Summer Skin Care Tips by Debra McClennan-Wagner

To maintain your healthy skin, it is important to have a good skin care regime throughout the summer. You always should cleanse and moisturize twice a day and use an SPF in the morning. During the summer months, you may want to use lighter products. An aesthetician can help you select what is best for you. Additionally, exfoliating once or twice a week and applying a mask weekly can help keep your skin looking and feeling its best. (See sidebar for recipes.)

All skin types benefit from exfoliation. Dry sensitive skin needs a gentle exfoliation like an enzyme whereas clogged oily skin may need microdermabrasion. If acne is present, a salicylic acid peel may be best to avoid stimulating oil production.

After being out in the sun, it is good to use aloe vera or shea butterbased lotions on your parched skin. A light moisturizer also is recommended.

Facials

A facial will deep cleanse the skin, exfoliate, increase circulation and detoxify, as well as relax the nerves and muscles. Regular facials year round will help slow down the aging process, balance the skin and clear up blemishes and minor acne. In the summer, calming, hydrating treatments with light exfoliation are great for the skin as sun, heat, humidity and chlorine really can affect your skin. Heat and humidity can cause breakouts and clogged pores and chlorine tends to dry the skin and the hair.

The best protection for your skin is moderate sun exposure but when you do go out, remember to apply SPF, including a lip balm with at least an SPF of 15 for your lips. Enjoy the summer
