The term “health coach” is a relatively new term that is finding its way into our everyday life. You may have heard of a friend or acquaintance who lost weight or was able to overcome a chronic condition with the help of a health coach. Or perhaps your doctor or chiropractor advised you to connect with a health coach for support with a particular health goal. Or maybe your local yoga studio, gym or spa hosted a talk by a health coach.
What is a Health Coach?
Health coaches coach their clients towards better health with a holistic approach to wellness, which means that they look at how all areas of life are connected. Health coaches are trained in multiple nutrition theories and believe that food can be and should be your medicine. However, they also believe that one’s lifestyle, in addition to what one eats and drinks, can lead to both imbalance and illness, as well as cure. And last but not least, health coaches know that the health of one’s body is intricately connected to the health of one’s mind and spirit. They support their clients through life events such as changes in careers, relationships and more.
Health coaches are knowledgeable advisors who provide ongoing support and guidance to their clients to help them achieve various goals, such as maintaining their ideal weight, increasing overall energy, reducing cravings, alleviating chronic pain, learning about new foods and healthy cooking, incorporating exercise, reducing stress, managing medications and much more. They offer simple step-by-step recommendations that are easy to incorporate into one’s life, yet can have profound effects. They listen, guide, teach and support their clients in a safe environment to help them live better, healthier and happier lives.
To become a certified health coach, one must complete a rigorous training course. Most certification programs take about 12 months to complete.
How Do I Find a Health Coach?
Some health coaches run wellness programs at companies, some work for school districts and some at doctors’ offices, gyms, and spas while others run their own private practices. They work in person, on the phone, or via Skype to provide individualized one-on-one support as well as group counseling and wellness and nutrition education. Many offer a free initial consultation, which can be conducted in person or over the phone. It’s a conversation that could change one’s life forever.
